You should have received a letter, sent out from the Branch Office on 10th November, outlining progress up until that date.  However, we have had a few letters returned to us stating addressee gone away – we are trying our best to locate where those people have moved to but if you haven’t received a copy of the Single Status letter then please contact the Branch Office with your correct details.

Since then:

  • Job Evaluations continue to be carried out.  Members will be supported if they wish to appeal against the outcome.
  • We are still waiting for definite proposals regarding the arrangements for backdating, protection and bonus schemes.
  • The Council want to link proposals for a new Competency Framework and an amended Performance Appraisal Scheme (to be used jointly to determine whether staff receive their annual increment or not) to the Single Status process.  We are resisting this.

We now have details of the cuts proposed for 2007-8, including the deletion of two services in Social Services (Hilltop House and the Community Adolescent Mental Health Services).  This includes deleting the equivalent of 87 full-time posts (including 34.7 which are currently filled) and the outsourcing of 83 jobs in Parking Services (see over).  We will of course be opposing these cuts and negotiating further with the Departments concerned.

A consultation exercise amongst members resulted in a majority in favour of the 2007 Pay Claim being for a flat rate increase of more than £1,000, although there was some support for a mixed claim and a small number who would prefer a percentage increase.  We’ve therefore reported back to Region that the Branch is in favour of a flat rate increase of more than £1,000.

Following on from the recent transfer of Off-Street Parking to NCP, the Council is now conducting a tendering process for the rest of Parking Services.  We’re not al all happy with the way in which this has been carried out.

Staff were informed by the Procurement Team that it was in order to be involved in two bids, one a direct in-house bid and one a joint bid with a private partner Steve Halsey (Director of ECSS) then announced that this wasn’t allowed, and that the joint bid would be ruled out (although the staff involved haven’t been informed why that was so, and are unhappy at the level of support and resources made available to the in-house bid).  We have made a request that the tendering process be halted and started again.

I’ve been involved in discussions regarding funding for courses of various kinds for staff, as distinct from job-related training.  We need to look hard at recruiting Learning Reps to get involved in this.  In particular, we could use the Council’s desire to introduce a Competency Framework to advance our arguments for this kind of training.

Advance warning!  We are holding both AGM Meetings on 1st March, the lunchtime one will be held in the Council Chamber at 12.30 pm and the afternoon one will be at the UNISON Social Club at 4.30 pm.  REMEMBER - you only need to attend one meeting and one hour time-off to attend is granted to all London Borough of Croydon employees.

Staff Side posts are up for re-election too.  Nominees for Staff Side must have at least 1 year’s current standing on the Branch Executive Committee, as either a Steward or Branch Officer, since May 2005; or 2 years standing, out of the last 5, on Staff Side.  Staff Side members are experienced Officers who can represent members across all Departments.  A major part of their role is to take part in negotiations with the Employers at Croydon Staff Partnership Panel Meetings twice a year.  The current incumbents will continue until May, as this is a Council Committee the incoming Staff Side will take up their positions when the Council's new committees start to function.  We will however, hold our elections at our AGM.  The nomination forms will be issued with the EC mailing.

We are always looking for more members to get actively involved in the Branch. There are many areas where members don't have a local Steward.

So - if you would like to get more involved in the Branch and its decision making, take part in negotiations with management and represent members, why not become a Steward or Health and Safety Rep?

We won't throw you in at the deep end. There are many courses available that are organised through the TUC or UNISON and they run throughout the year. You will also have the support of the Branch Office. Time off for full training is available, please contact the Branch Office for more details or e-mail branchoffice@croydonunison.co.uk

It has recently come to light that some members are not getting information about the Branch and its activities. If this is the case please let us know in the Branch Office either by phone on 8760-5435 or via e-mail to branchoffice@croydonunison.co.uk

If you are prepared to be a workplace contact for us, which involves handing out UNISON information, Newsletters etc to your fellow UNISON members again please let us know in the Branch Office.

We want to make sure all our members are informed on what's happening in the Branch.
