If you haven’t done so already, Take the Pension Test you might just be surprised at the answers!
You should have received a letter, sent out from the Branch Office on 10th November, outlining progress up until that date. However, we have had a few letters returned to us stating addressee gone away – we are trying our best to locate where those people have moved to but if you haven’t received a copy of the Single Status letter then please contact the Branch Office with your correct details.
We now have details of the cuts proposed for 2007-8, including the deletion of two services in Social Services (Hilltop House and the Community Adolescent Mental Health Services). This includes deleting the equivalent of 87 full-time posts (including 34.7 which are currently filled) and the outsourcing of 83 jobs in Parking Services (see over). We will of course be opposing these cuts and negotiating further with the Departments concerned.
A consultation exercise amongst members resulted in a majority in favour of the 2007 Pay Claim being for a flat rate increase of more than £1,000, although there was some support for a mixed claim and a small number who would prefer a percentage increase. We’ve therefore reported back to Region that the Branch is in favour of a flat rate increase of more than £1,000.
Following on from the recent transfer of Off-Street Parking to NCP, the Council is now conducting a tendering process for the rest of Parking Services. We’re not al all happy with the way in which this has been carried out.
Staff were informed by the Procurement Team that it was in order to be involved in two bids, one a direct in-house bid and one a joint bid with a private partner Steve Halsey (Director of ECSS) then announced that this wasn’t allowed, and that the joint bid would be ruled out (although the staff involved haven’t been informed why that was so, and are unhappy at the level of support and resources made available to the in-house bid). We have made a request that the tendering process be halted and started again.
SKILLS FOR LIFE
I’ve been involved in discussions regarding funding for courses of various kinds for staff, as distinct from job-related training. We need to look hard at recruiting Learning Reps to get involved in this. In particular, we could use the Council’s desire to introduce a Competency Framework to advance our arguments for this kind of training.
