Croydon UNISON Social Club

It is with great regret that we have to announce that the Social Club at its Chatsworth Road location will cease trading from 28th April.

At the Club’s Annual General Meeting, held on 21st March it was reluctantly agreed to take this measure, as the last few years have proved difficult for the Social Club, due mainly to the lack of usage by our membership, and the number of bars that have opened in Central Croydon, with which the Club found it very difficult to compete.  It has been a valuable asset to the Branch over the years and despite the sterling efforts of the Management Committee, past and present, to keep it going it can no longer be sustainable.

Many of us have happy memories of the Club, including milestone birthday celebrations, wedding parties and strike events and we will be sad to see it close.  We will be holding a “Cheerio Chatsworth” night on Friday 27th April if you would like to come along then please contact the Club Secretary phil.young@croydon.gov.uk as we will need to know numbers attending.

However, it is not all gloom and doom, as preliminary discussions have been held with the Council’s Chief Executive, David Wechsler, on the possibility of having a new social club facility within the Town Hall complex.  Many hurdles will have to be overcome before this can become a reality and we are asking our members to put forward any ideas or facilities they would like included in the new club.  If you have any comments then please add them to our “wish list” by contacting Phil Young at the email address above.

A new Committee was also elected at the AGM, as they will be needed to see through the closure of Chatsworth and the setting up of the new club.

It is our intent to use this page to keep you informed of any updates and progress in the negotiations.
